Mentour’s Black Box Launches with Investigations Beyond Aviation

Mentour’s Black Box is now live, a new YouTube channel from Petter Hörnfeldt and the team behind Mentour Pilot.

The idea began with a question: could the same careful research that powers Mentour Pilot help explain disasters outside aviation?

Over the past 12 months, Petter, the Mentour team and Electrify have developed that idea into a new channel. Black Box investigates the decisions, ignored warnings and technical failures that build up before a disaster. Its stories reach beyond aircraft into engineering, infrastructure and industrial safety.

Each film starts with what happened, then follows the evidence backwards. The aim is to make complicated chains of events understandable without losing sight of the people affected.

The first episode examines the 2020 Beirut port explosion. It looks at how thousands of tonnes of ammonium nitrate came to be stored in the city, the warnings raised over several years and the failures that allowed one of the largest non-nuclear explosions in modern history to happen.

Future films will investigate events including the Vajont Dam disaster, the Kader toy factory fire and the Love Parade crowd disaster in Duisburg.

The channel’s guiding idea is simple: every disaster is a lesson. By documenting how these events developed, Black Box asks what should have happened differently and what can be learned before the same failures happen again.
